Next.js published a walkthrough of Instant Navigations in 16.3, built on Cache Components and Partial Prefetching. Cache Components keep a route ready with static, cached, and fallback UI; Partial Prefetching fetches that App Shell for visible Link components before a click. The post demos the pattern in Next Beats, Drop, Flow, and Huddle — music, social, calendar, and chat apps that feel like SPAs while still rendering on the server.
The guide covers caching with 'use cache' and cacheLife/cacheTag, prefetch={true} for URL-specific content, Client Component islands with shared providers, revalidation via updateTag after Server Actions, experimental offline retry with useOffline, nested Suspense for stable streaming, useTransition/useOptimistic for mutations, and React View Transitions for reveals and route slides. The demos are open source with Playwright tests using the instant() helper.
That App Router navigation and caching story is the same Next.js path you start from in Chapter 1.
