Workflow SDK: durable TypeScript without a new orchestrator

On August 27, 2026, Pranay Prakash described Workflow SDK as durable execution that feels like ordinary TypeScript instead of a hand-drawn DAG. Mark an orchestrator with use workflow and side-effecting work with use step; between them you keep await, try/catch, Promise.all, loops, and conditionals. The compiler splits that one file into workflow and step bundles, retries uncaught errors by default, and replaces Temporal-style signals/queries/updates with a single hook primitive — including createWebhook() for an ad-hoc URL that parks a run until someone POSTs.

The post frames Workflow SDK as a library, not a platform: the runtime talks to a swappable World for storage, queuing, auth, and streaming (Postgres, Redis, Kafka, Vercel Queues, and more). On Vercel, each run pins to the immutable deployment that started it so changing workflow code does not break in-flight runs. Workflow v5 (beta) is said to cut step overhead substantially, with the long-term goal that steps feel free.

That durable server work sits next to the Node and App Router path you take in Chapter 5 and Chapter 1 when you ship full-stack apps on Vercel.
